Siaba Besar gets its name from the island where it is located. Being Siaba the name of the island and Besar means «Big» in Indonesian. The Big Siaba would be his translation.
The island of Siaba Besar is located in the central part of the Komodo National Park and dive site is located in its western part.
Siaba Besar is a suitable dive site for any kind of levels, being the best place for those who have never dived and want to try in Komodo.
The topography of this point is quite wide, having different parts to stand out.
We have a big sandy area whose maximum depth can reach 15m in some points. This area is perfect for macro lovers. The sand hides an endless amount of small life that we will talk about later.
The second part to stand out in Siaba Besar is its coral garden. A shallow reef surrounds the whole point. But in the west side we have one of the most impressive coral gardens of the Komodo National Park and we call it «Turtle City» due to the amount of turtles that we can find in it. And then we have the Channel that is located on the west, after the reef and is where we can take more depth. This is the channel that separates Siaba Besar from her little sister Siaba Kecil. Here depending on the tides and strength of the current we will enter on it or we will enjoy the show from outside the channel.
As we have already said Siaba Besar is perfect for those who want to try for the first time in Komodo and are not certified. This is because it is completely surrounded by shallow reef. So normally we do not find current or if we find it will be a very slight one.
But all this changes if we enter the channel west of Siaba. Here depending on the moment and the strength of the tide we can go more or less into it. In times of strong current is when we can feel this throughout all the dive site, but in the sandy area and reef will be much softer.
In question marine life Siaba Besar has almost everything.
In the sand area we can find macro (small life) such as nudibranchs, frogfish, pipe fish of many types (Ornate, ghost …), prawns of all kinds, crabs, flamboyant cuttlefish, seahorses and endless life .
But not only we have small life, here as we have said is a place where we can find turtles, mostly green. Whitetip reef sharks, bamboo, black tip. Lionfish, cuttlefish, angel fish, Trigger fish of all kinds, moray eels, and much much more!
